What is Gum Disease?
Gum disease is one of the most common dental health issues in the world, estimated to impact one out of every two adults in the United States alone (according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). It is an infection that affects the health of the foundation of your smile, your gums, and there are different stages.
The early stage of gum disease is called gingivitis, which can be treated and even reversed. When left untreated or undiagnosed, it can progress into late-stage gum disease, called periodontitis. This stage can be managed, but the infection itself typically can’t be reversed at this point.
Symptoms of Gum Disease
There are several different signs that can indicate the presence of gum disease. Depending on the progression of the infection, you may notice:
- Red and inflamed gums
- Chronic bad breath
- Dental sensitivity
- Bleeding that occurs when you brush or floss
- Gum recession that makes your teeth appear longer
- A change in your bite
- Loose permanent teeth
If you notice any of the following symptoms, we recommend scheduling a checkup with our team at The Elegant Dentistry to keep your smile’s health on the right track.
How We Treat Gum Disease
Dr. Pankti and Dr. Jainisha are two highly skilled, qualified dentists that are dedicated to helping their patients maintain healthy and whole smiles. If they spot any signs of gum disease at your routine checkups and cleanings, they may recommend one or more of the following treatments:
Scaling & Root Planing
Scaling and root planing is a two-step process that typically takes place over the course of two visits with our team. First, we’ll clear away all plaque and tartar from the surface of your teeth to minimize bacteria build-up in your mouth. Then, we’ll smooth out the roots by removing any hardened deposits of bacteria on them. This will allow your gums to healthily reattach to the dental structure to keep your roots protected from infection.
Laser Periodontal Treatment
Our soft tissue laser is an advanced piece of equipment that emits a beam of light that can kill harmful bacteria on-the-spot and easily remove damaged gum tissue without the use of a scalpel. Because it cauterizes the area, you’ll experience reduced bleeding and there won’t be any need for stitches. Once complete, you’ll have only healthy gum tissue that’s left behind.
Antibiotic Treatment
In addition to scaling and root planing, we may also recommend antibiotic therapy to aid in your body’s effort to fight off the harmful bacteria that are infecting the gums. It’s important to complete the entire medication as prescribed to prevent antibiotic resistance. After you’ve been on the antibiotics for a week or so, we’ll have you come back in for a follow-up to make sure that the therapy is working as it should be.
